ACCIONA Energía has a platform of renewable electricity generation assets, with 11,826 MW of total installed capacity, of which 74% is wind technology, 16% solar photovoltaic, 7% hydroelectric, 2% battery storage and the rest comes from biomass and solar thermal.

Wind power

ACCIONA Energía is already the world’s seventh largest operator in terms of owned installed onshore wind capacity, excluding operators in China (according to IHS Markit), with a total of 8,751 MW.

In addition, ACCIONA Energía remains strongly committed to offshore wind technology and to bolster its capabilities. In 2022, it became the first Eolink shareholder, a start-up that has developed a pyramidal floating platform capable of orienting itself according to the wind direction, therefore optimizing costs and maximizing performance.

Energy Storage

ACCIONA Energy is now recognised as a pioneer in Spain in the grid integration of storage in wind and photovoltaic plants. In 2022 it signed an agreement with Qcells to acquire a portfolio of more than 1 GW of battery energy storage in the United States and a project, Cunningham (190 MW), which will be the largest on the Texas grid and will come on line in the first quarter of 2023.

Green hydrogen

In 2022, ACCIONA Energía inaugurated the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain (in Lloseta, Mallorca), thus becoming a European benchmark as the first hydrogen ecosystem encompassing the entire value chain. At the same time, in Spain and Portugal, the ACCIONA Plug joint venture continues to make progress in the pursuance of a broad electrolyzer portfolio.

Energy services

The company designs and invests in solutions that optimize and reduce the energy consumption of public and private customers.

In 2022, the company entered the French market and started operations in Gijon, in what has been the largest energy services contract tendered in Spain to date, thus consolidating its leadership in energy services.

New energy solutions

ACCIONA Energía remains very active in the development of new optimization models for renewable generation, expansion of the offer to customers and launch of key technological niches. In addition to green hydrogen, storage, electric vehicle, and circular economy solutions, following an innovation plan based on the study of the industry’s cutting-edge technological trends.

15 %

of innovation projects will incorporate some regenerative element in their design and execution.

Circular economy solutions

In 2022, ACCIONA Energía recycled 98% of the waste generated through its circular economy programs, which was almost 1% more than the previous year.

By 2030, around 50,000 turbines are expected to reach the end of their life cycle in Europe, so the goal is to provide a comprehensive wind farm decommissioning offer.

Free market trends

According to the International Energy Agency, the world will generate as much renewable energy in the next five years as in the last twenty. An increase in renewable energy capacity of 2,400 GW is forecast for the period between 2022 and 2027, which is equivalent to all of China’s current energy production.

This strong increase is 30% higher than last year’s forecasts and shows the extent to which governments have promoted clean energy.

Sustained and profitable growth

The energy sector is in a state of urgency, with an existing gap between the 2030 sustainable development goals and the historic crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In the quest for immediate strategic independence after the negative impacts of geopolitical conflict, an unprecedented drive for clean energies has been unleashed, further establishing their credentials as competitive and autonomous, reaching record investment levels by 2022

In this new context, the company maintains the commitment it made at the IPO to accelerate its growth and plans to multiply its investment in the coming years, from 12 GW installed in 2022 to 30 GW in 2030.
