ACCIONA Energía projects seek a positive impact on the planet through business models based on decarbonisation, ecosystem conservation and the circular use of resources.

The goal is to broaden the awareness for the transition to a decarbonized economy, to generate net positive natural capital, to develop zero waste projects, and to significantly increase the supply of quality water and its sustainable use with high technology.

2022 Milestones

  • GHG emissions have been reduced by 80% (scopes 1 and 2) compared to 2017, in line with the SBT target of 1.5 ºC reduction by 2030. Emissions generated have been offset to reach neutrality.
  • More than 99 % of eligible CAPEX is aligned with the European Taxonomy of sustainable activities.
  • Cumulative voluntary planting of 198,081 trees (2021-2022).
  • 98% of waste generation was destined for recovery and 13% of the resources consumed were renewed or recycled.
  • Implementing the first pilot phase of nature-related risks quantification -TNFD..
  • Surface, ground, and municipal water consumption in water-stressed areas was reduced by 45% compared to 2020.

2023 Challenges

  • Reducing GHG emissions in line with the 2030 SBT target of 1.5 ºC reduction, and offsetting GHG emissions of its direct operations.
  • Investing at least 95% of CAPEX in sustainable activities according to the European Taxonomy.
  • Carrying out the voluntary planting of 117,500 trees.
  • Maintaining the amount of total waste destined for recovery over 95%.
  • Increasing the percentage of renewable resources in line with the 2025 target of doubling the consumption of recycled materials.
  • Continuing to reduce surface, ground, and municipal water consumption over 12% in water-stressed areas compared to 2020.
ACCIONA Energía: the greenest electricity company in the world for the eighth consecutive year.

ACCIONA Energía: the greenest electricity company in the world for the eighth consecutive year.

The ranking covers more than one hundred of the largest electricity companies in the world and values them according to their CO₂ emissions and their installed capacity in renewable technologies.

Circular economy

In the field of renewable energies in which ACCIONA Energía operates, the transition towards a circular economy will not only allow a significant reduction in the use of natural resources and in environmental impact, but will also imply an economic opportunity derived from the competitive advantage and, if the appropriate processes are developed, will enable a better recovery and regeneration of natural capital.

ACCIONA Energía has had a Circular Economy Policy since 2021, the principles of which are summarized as follows:

Integration of the circular economy into ESG risk management Use technology to optimize and adopt a life cycle perspective. Renaturalize areas degraded by operations. Support regulatory development around the circular economy, setting targets and accountability. Promote new business and investment models, seeking new uses for complex materials to promote the development of local ecosystems. Imitate as much as possible the behavior of nature to optimize the circularity of operations.

Integrated environmental management

Industrial activity has an impact on the environment. For this reason, ACCIONA Energía prioritizes the precautionary principle in all its activities.

The integrated management of environmental, climate and water risks; the reduction and offsetting of emissions generated; the promotion of the circular economy and the preservation of biodiversity are all actions integrated into the company’s business model.

In 2022, ACCIONA Energía allocated 22.5 million euros to the management (prevention, reduction, or repairment) of the environmental impacts generated by the company’s activity, of which 20.3 million euros were due to expenses and 2.2 million euros to investments.

Ongoing projects

Circularity in the management of wind turbine blade waste

Although this kind of waste currently represents a very small amount at ACCIONA Energía, the company is already working on developing solutions for recycling or reusing the materials that make up wind turbine blades (basically fibers and resin in similar quantities).

Therefore, during 2022 it deployed an innovative demo project consisting of the recycling of materials from its blades for use in the construction of new ACCIONA Energía photovoltaic plants. The project involved the manufacturing of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) profiles using pultrusion technology, replacing the steel in the structure that supports the photovoltaic panels with this recycled material.

TNFD Framework: managing nature-related risks in two ACCIONA Energía’s pilot projects

TNFD is a global initiative driven by the need to integrate nature-related risks into financial and business decisions. It sets out several developments to be completed by the end of 2023 and is articulated through the LEAP methodology, based on four steps:

  • Locating: locating the activities and the ecosystems where the activities will take place.
  • Evaluating: identifying impacts and dependencies.
  • Assessing: analyzing risks and opportunities.
  • Preparing: communicating results and reporting to investors.

During 2022, ACCIONA Energía led the development of two pilot projects.

Improving biodiversity in coal dumps (Palencia)

Thanks to an agreement with the Castilla y León Natural Heritage Foundation, ACCIONA Energía has financed the recovery of the coal dumps in the Las Mercedes mine (Santullán Valley 2022). The plantation area, 15 hectares, has a high ecological potential due to its proximity to the border of the Montaña Palentina Natural Park, within the Cantabrian brown bear breeding areas.

The main objetive is the restoration of degraded areas ever since intense coal mining activity stopped. 12,894 specimens of 13 different native species have been planted, able to adapt to the soil conditions of a coal dump.
